The Yellow Gulmohar

At the sight of these yellow beauties, my mind takes me back involuntarily, to my childhood days in Nandanam. As the name suggests, Nandanam was a cosy, pleasant, beautiful and calm area with these yellow Gulmohar trees on either sides of the roads. Little did I realize that these flowers will be etched in my little mind forever to come!

We had moved to Nandanam when I was hardly 10! What a peaceful age that was!! The innocence, the carefree attitude towards life, the mind that constantly ponders on what next mischief will give a hearty laugh, the security that parents will take care of you, the assurance of friends and neighbours in case of a bad day, the cricket matches and “hide & seek” (and several other random games) played on the streets with our neighbouring friends and classmates, sibling fights, getting awed at the mangoes and aspiring to pluck each one of them and share them with our friends, summer time, exams followed by vacations, water scarcity... all of this and more rush, in no particular order, into my mind now, just at the sight of these beautiful yellow Gulmohar flowers, that are strewn so eye-catchingly on the roads to make us feel that each of us have our right to get an yellow carpet welcome when we stride through these streets.

Childhood so precious.... and the associated memories even more!
