Fairer sex in the board?

Cross-posted from my blogpost inside my company...

Tamil Nadu SSLC results were announced today. Girls have topped across the state. Makes me think…when girls could top the ‘board’ why is that we have very negligible women population in our ‘board’ rooms?

Women are meticuluous, sincere, hard-working, great team makers, intelligent, tech-savvy, studious and what not?! What makes that population wear-off as they enter the work force?

At the bottom of the pyramid, we have almost an equal ratio of men:women. Very soon, may be that would change and women would be more there than the men. As we go up the ladder, women fizzle out and then become almost invisible at the ‘board’? What skills do women lack to reach there? Can the system produce only one Indra Nooyi? only one Kiran Bedi? only one Chanda Kochar? one Barkha Dutt?

Where is the problem? The attitude of these women? Their families’ support? Society’s suppression? Men dominance? Where is the problem really?

Research says that women make better managers and CxOs. They bring in so much harmony. They focus better on deals than the men. So where and why are we missing that smart lot in the board rooms?

As you have rightly said, women have the capability to excel in every role they play. It is in the role of mother, that every women takes the toughest decision while deciding the Professional growth or entry into the "Board". And this decision, most often in Indian context is always negative:-(

its so simple, women dont take so much responsibility...
they are more attached to family..
they cannot all d time think of the company or the board.
Every woman is the CEO of their family.. their responsibility lies here..
only few go beyond this like Nooyi or kiran bedi..
days are too short.. if thier length is increased, more women ll hit d board..
i hope GD ll reach board room soon..
all d best m'am !!

Thanks for dropping by Anand & Raghul.

I am not here talking of women who quit or take a lesser role to manage home-front. I am trying to think hard for those women who have it in them, who manage work & life, team & family and yet are not even runners-up!

Is there a corporate factor to this?

People nowadays have started appreciating women taking the family role too. Those who know how difficult to manage a family, kids. It all lies in your perspective.

And the thrust of the media is more that women should be working to prove herself etc etc.

One living example is Sudha Narayanamurthy. If she had not decided to stay at home today there would be no Infosys. I hope u wud have recd that fwd.

If you read Bhagvat Gita, it says be contended. What you require ultimately is peace of mind.

Okay, okay Gayathri, i think i am writing too much. Iam not against women entering boardroom.

Gayathri glad to know that u have come a long way to make urself here.
